Empowering refugees to rebuild careers

Forced to flee conflict, climate disasters, and persecution, refugees arrive in the UK ready to rebuild their lives. But with an unemployment rate four times higher than the national average, securing the right job remains a huge challenge. Many talented individuals end up in roles that don’t match their skills or experience, while UK industries continue to struggle with skills gaps and unfilled vacancies.

At the CIPD Trust, we’re breaking down these barriers. Through our Rebuilding Futures programme, we connect refugees with expert people professionals who provide specialist mentoring and employment support, helping them restart their careers and thrive in the workplace.

In 2025, we launched our Guide to hiring refugees providing practical recommendations and information for organisations on recruiting and supporting refugees in employment.

By harnessing the power of inclusive employment, we can unlock potential, fill skills gaps, and create opportunities that benefit everyone.


Top tips for supporting refugees: 

  • Remember every experience is different and so refugees will all have different needs. Establish a process for ongoing dialogue to help identify any challenges and adapt your approach as needed.  
  • Provide people managers with training, general advice or guidance on practical requirements, as well as the challenges experienced by refugees and the role that they can play in helping them build a career within your organisation.  
  • Communicate your approach with your current employees, providing information on your strategy, how this can benefit the organisation, and how they can play a part in welcoming these new employees.  
  • Be proactive about sharing information about any organisational wellbeing support processes.
