Rebuilding Futures and forming a friendship that goes beyond mentoring
Nikki von Bulow, a seasoned HR professional and workplace mediator, leveraged her diverse skill set and extensive network to mentor Hamza Fayaz, a civil and structural engineer from Afghanistan and part of the Trust’s Rebuilding Futures mentoring programme. Nikki’s expertise, combined with Hamza’s determination, resulted in Hamza securing his first contract in the UK and a friendship that will outlive the mentoring relationship. Here’s their story…

A challenging scope
Nikki’s career in HR spans working in investment banks, corporate HR roles in large organisations, and workplace mediation through her consultancy, Venn Mediation UK. Her work with Hamza presented a unique challenge: applying her experience in HR and navigating the UK workplace to support an individual transitioning into the UK construction industry, an area outside her usual field of expertise. Nikki says:
I had to educate myself as to what was needed and the best process to do this. I hoped that I could draw on my networks, firstly to get Hamza’s CV up-to-date and then to secure him some experience in the right sector. We could then look at getting him a role in construction.”
Hamza had significant engineering experience in Afghanistan but faced multiple challenges upon arriving in the UK. Having spent 12 months seeking asylum and acclimating to a vastly different environment, he needed guidance on UK workplace norms, professional credentials, and opportunities for employment.
Utilising networks
Hamza had proactively prepared a CV and applied for various construction jobs but encountered a significant barrier: the lack of UK work experience and references. Recognising this, Nikki focused on building his confidence and credibility in the local job market. She started by familiarising herself with the construction industry and enlisting support from her professional network.
Their first meeting, facilitated with construction consultant Sue Archer – a contact of Nikki’s – took place at the British Library. Sue provided critical insights, helping to translate Hamza’s broad engineering experience into terms relevant to UK employers. This collaborative effort revamped Hamza’s CV, presenting his skills in a way which was aligned with industry expectations.
A work-shadowing opportunity
Nikki’s network proved invaluable. She introduced Hamza to Andrew Ellingworth, a partner at Ridge and Partners, who then connected him with James Bishop, Head of Civil and Structural Engineering in London, at the same firm. This led to a three-week shadowing opportunity where Hamza gained exposure to high-level projects, site visits, and insights into UK construction practices.
During this time, Hamza learned about legal and safety standards, as well as procedural differences in the UK construction sector. The experience not only enhanced his technical understanding but also provided him with credible UK references which was essential for securing future roles. With his new found confidence and industry-specific preparation, Hamza secured a contract as a construction project manager for a community centre redevelopment in London. While his contract initially specified 24 hours a week, his diligence and commitment has led him to work upwards of 40 hours per week, earning the trust of his employer and laying the groundwork for potential long-term employment
Beyond mentoring
Nikki’s support extended beyond the parameters of a typical mentoring relationship. She helped Hamza navigate practical challenges, such as obtaining a driving licence, understanding public transport and supporting him as he managed housing arrangements. Nikki’s insights were crucial for Hamza’s integration into life in the UK and her holistic mentoring approach has strengthened Hamza’s confidence in both his personal and professional life.
Hamza describes Nikki’s mentorship as life-changing, praising her open and supportive approach. He says:
Without Nikki and the contacts she introduced me to, the journey I’ve been on wouldn’t have been possible. Being in a different country means that everything is different and you have to work out new procedures and ways of doing things. Having the mentoring relationship has really changed the whole dynamic and I can now look to the future. I hope that everyone gets the same kind of mentoring experience. I don’t call it mentoring or friendship; I feel like I’ve found my family.”
Nikki, in turn, has found the experience deeply rewarding, noting Hamza’s determination and resourcefulness as key factors in his success.
Future aspirations
Hamza’s immediate goal is to convert his current contract into permanent employment, securing the stability of a full-time position. Beyond that, he hopes to continue growing within the UK construction industry and, one day, mentor others facing similar challenges.
For Nikki, mentoring has reinforced the importance of personalised support and the power of professional networks. She remains committed to staying in touch with Hamza, offering guidance as needed, and looks forward to seeing his future successes. She says:
Hamza is an exceptional human being. People want to be associated with him. I look forward to staying in touch and seeing how he excels, not just because of his technical ability but because of his drive, energy and positivity. Working with him has been an exceptional experience.”
